Following an extensive exercise, BAA Gatwick has awarded the tender for the provision of taxi services at the airport to Checker Cars, the current provider.
As part of the new contract, Checker Cars has undertaken to make a number of improvements to the service they provide airport users, including the replacement of a significant part of its fleet with new people carrier vehicles. These will be more environmentally friendly, with fewer CO2 emissions, safer and more comfortable for taxi passengers.
Additionally, better passenger information will be available to those booking taxis and the booking process will be made more efficient through a greater use of technology, using computerised booking systems, hand-held devices for staff on the forecourts and better computer systems for the taxi drivers.
“The tender process we have just gone through is an important part of ensuring quality for airport passengers,” Fraser Brown, Head of Commercial Transport BAA Gatwick said. “Requiring the existing company to retender and inviting proposals from other businesses, ensures our airport passengers are provided with the best taxi service available. Checker Cars will be making a number of changes to benefit passengers and will be looking at ways to make further improvements all the time. We are pleased to see that Checker Cars are to continue the association with BAA Gatwick.”
Improvements will also be made to other aspects of the service, including pricing structure and developing new business for journeys to the airport, where the concentration previously has been on providing services for passengers travelling away from the airport.
